About Us

In 1960, a local businessman named Tom Perrine had a dream of building a country club on the east side of Indianapolis.

Mr. Perrine wanted to hire local great amateur golfers to design the course. He envisioned that would attract other local golfers from all over Indianapolis to join. Perrine ended up hiring Pete and Alice Dye to design, build, and move the land to their liking for an 18-hole family golf course. It would be Mr. and Mrs. Dye's very first 18 hole design in their newly established company called Dye Designs.

The course opened early in the fall of 1961 as Heather Hills Country Club. The course would be rebranded to Maple Creek Country Club in 1989 and still carries the name today. Maple Creek Country Club is now known by golf historians as the first 18-hole course designed by world renowned course architect and Golf Hall of Fame Member, Pete Dye.

Still a staple of the far east side community today, we try to honor our history daily by presenting a welcoming club atmosphere that members can be proud to call their home.

  • Pete & Alice Dye
    • Pete Dye was an insurance salesman for Connecticut Mutual Life Insurance for several years in the 1950's, but Pete came home to his loving wife Alice with a change of heart, and began to disclose his innovative idea of building and designing golf courses. Alice supported his decision, and they embarked on what would become the career of a lifetime, changing the world of golf forever. They started a design business called Dye Designs. Shortly after, Maple Creek Country Club played a vital role in his life in 1960. Pete was given the opportunity of a lifetime by a man named Tom Perrine who was a developer and like Mr. Dye, a dreamer. He hired Pete and his wife Alice to build, move the land to their liking, and design an 18-hole family golf course. It was their very first 18 hole design. They would originally call it Heather Hills Country Club. Advertisements were primarily focused on the design aspects of the project. Perrine believed that the Dye's reputation as talented amateur players would spark an interest the general public.

The course opened in the fall of 1961; It helped to catapult Mr. Dye’s career and credibility as a course designer. Pete was given an honorary membership to Maple Creek in September of 1991. Dye returned multiple times over the years with Alice for redesigns, book signings, and just to see the growth of the trees. Pete’s legacy lives on in his sons and relatives who continue running Dye Designs today with projects all over the world. We are forever grateful to Pete and the life he lived. Without him, we wouldn’t have the golf course that we know and love today here at Maple Creek Country Club.

Pete was very proud of early works in his career. He was once asked, "Which course was the most fun to design?" With a smile, Dye answered, “That would have to be Heather Hills.”
Pete and Alice Dye would design over 130 golf courses worldwide including our club here, Maple Creek Country Club. Many of their designs have received tremendous notoriety and recognition including: Crooked Stick Golf Club (PGA Championship Venue), TPC Sawgrass (home of the famous Island Green Par 3 and The Players Championship), Whistling Straits Golf Club (3-Time PGA Championship Venue), Harbour Town Golf Links, PGA West, The Dye Course at French Lick, and Kiawah Island Golf Club (credited for making the Ryder Cup rivalry what it is today.)

  • The Bego Family
    • Despite decades of growth and continued support from its members, the Club fell on hard financial times and was sold in 2001. By 2006, without much improvement, it appeared that the Club was headed into the clutches of a housing developer; fortunately longtime member and prominent local businessman Dave Bego had moved back to Indianapolis and was determined to protect the legacy of Pete Dye's first course.

"It would be criminal to allow Pete Dye's inaugural 18 holes to be plowed under. He will stand the test of time as one of the game's great designers. It's a really nice course, and I think Maple Creek is a real asset for the east side of Indianapolis. I didn't want to see that go away. I have such fond memories of spending time at the Club." Mr. Bego purchased the entire facility as the lone investor in 2006 and began making renovations to the golf course and clubhouse. He built a brand new pavilion for large parties and events and renovated the club's pool facilities. He wanted to keep the golf course design to Pete's original vision, so he invited him to consult the course modifications in 2007. Pete was happy to return where it all began, and Maple Creek was happy to host him, Alice and their dog, Sixty. After moving several tees and making a few minor adjustments, the course was given a new life with design changes from its original creator.

To this day, Dave and his wife Barb can be seen often at the Club enjoying the amenities weekly. The Bego family now celebrates 4 generations of golfing members at historic Maple Creek Country Club.
