Pete Dye was an insurance salesman for Connecticut Mutual Life Insurance for several years in the 1950's, but Pete came home to his loving wife Alice with a change of heart, and began to disclose his innovative idea of building and designing golf courses. Alice supported his decision, and they embarked on what would become the career of a lifetime, changing the world of golf forever. They started a design business called Dye Designs. Shortly after, Maple Creek Country Club played a vital role in his life in 1960. Pete was given the opportunity of a lifetime by a man named Tom Perrine who was a developer and like Mr. Dye, a dreamer. He hired Pete and his wife Alice to build, move the land to their liking, and design an 18-hole family golf course. It was their very first 18 hole design. They would originally call it Heather Hills Country Club. Advertisements were primarily focused on the design aspects of the project. Perrine believed that the Dye's reputation as talented amateur players would spark an interest the general public.
The course opened in the fall of 1961; It helped to catapult Mr. Dye’s career and credibility as a course designer. Pete was given an honorary membership to Maple Creek in September of 1991. Dye returned multiple times over the years with Alice for redesigns, book signings, and just to see the growth of the trees. Pete’s legacy lives on in his sons and relatives who continue running Dye Designs today with projects all over the world. We are forever grateful to Pete and the life he lived. Without him, we wouldn’t have the golf course that we know and love today here at Maple Creek Country Club.
Pete was very proud of early works in his career. He was once asked, "Which course was the most fun to design?" With a smile, Dye answered, “That would have to be Heather Hills.”
Pete and Alice Dye would design over 130 golf courses worldwide including our club here, Maple Creek Country Club. Many of their designs have received tremendous notoriety and recognition including: Crooked Stick Golf Club (PGA Championship Venue), TPC Sawgrass (home of the famous Island Green Par 3 and The Players Championship), Whistling Straits Golf Club (3-Time PGA Championship Venue), Harbour Town Golf Links, PGA West, The Dye Course at French Lick, and Kiawah Island Golf Club (credited for making the Ryder Cup rivalry what it is today.)
